Show Details

Celebrating CCS’s 20th Anniversary, two of Vermont’s most acclaimed cartoonists, Alison Bechdel and Tillie Walden ‘16, will share the stage for a rare public conversation about art, place, and the ways Vermont has shaped their work. Both artists have served as Vermont Cartoonist Laureate, and both have made international contributions to the art of comics—Bechdel through her groundbreaking memoirs Fun Home and Are You My Mother?, and Walden through her Eisner Award–winning memoir, Spinning, and space romance, On a Sunbeam. Friday, November 21st, from 3–4 pm EST. The conversation will be livestreamed for free. Special thanks to our event partner, Junction Arts Media (JAM), for providing live streaming of this event. Her graphic memoir Fun Home was named Time Magazine’s Best Book of 2006 and later became a Tony Award–winning Broadway musical. Bechdel’s later works — Are You My Mother? and The Secret to Superhuman Strength — continue her exploration of the inner life and its connection to the wider world. A former Cartoonist Laureate of Vermont, she lives in the state where her forthcoming graphic novel, Spent, is set. Tillie Walden ‘16 is a cartoonist and illustrator from Austin, Texas, and a graduate of The Center for Cartoon Studies in Vermont. During her time at CCS, she published three books with the London-based Avery Hill Publishing. Her later works include the autobiographical Spinning, the sci-fi epic On a Sunbeam, and Are You Listening?, a magical realist road trip story. Her most recent projects include Clementine, a trilogy set in The Walking Dead universe, and a two-volume collaboration with musicians Tegan and Sara Quin. She is currently at work on Charity and Sylvia in partnership with Vermont Humanities. The winner of multiple Eisner Awards and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, Walden is the current Cartoonist Laureate of Vermont and lives in the state with her family. @CARTOONSTUDIESvt ?
