Show Details

A neurodivergent, award-winning writer and frequent Pushcart Prize nominee, James K. Zimmerman's work appears in Chautauqua, December, Folio, Lumina, Nimrod, Pleiades, Rattle, Salamander, and elsewhere. He is author of Little Miracles (Passager Books), Family Cookout (Comstock) – winner of the Jessie Bryce Niles Prize – and The Further Adventures of Zen Patriarch Dogen (Poetry Box). The poems in The Further Adventures of Zen Patriarch Dogen envision the perspective of the 13th -century Japanese founder of the Soto school of Zen if he were alive today. Buddhist concepts of full presence, impermanence, no-self, and the path to liberation play out through Dogen’s experience in a self-driving car and a dentist’s chair, at the water’s edge, in the contemplation of circularity. In a world of bare attention, there are no words; inherent in these poems is the paradox of expressing this experience through the medium of language.
