In Security // In Community Artist Reception

Show Details

Throughout the summer, JAM has been home to the multimedia art installation, "In Security // In Community" by artists' Corinne Yonce, Maeve Littau, and Jordyn Fitch. Artist Statement: In Security // In Community In Security // In Community seeks to explore our relationship to Home and housing by presenting how they have changed over time. The multimedia exhibit uncovers the ongoing historical processes which have coalesced into our contemporary housing situation and understanding of how housing “should” look. Images of redlining, settler-colonialism, and 19th century social engineering projects are overlaid with animated graphs conveying an increasingly dire context to reveal how we’ve arrived at this housing crisis. Viewers look through window panes to see news articles depicting a class struggle between land-lords and tenants, who are pitted against each other by diametrically opposed class incentives. We invite viewers to look through these panes and not only see the actions people across the nation are taking to reclaim dignity and control over their housing situations, but also to imagine the possibilities for their own communities. What might housing look like if we all worked together to achieve and implement an entirely new vision? The installation aims to encourage the viewer to think critically about their relationship to housing, what their home looks like, and what systems shape these understandings. In Security // In Community serves as a call to action for all tenants to organize together in order to wield their political power to build a more just world by taking their housing into their own hands. This multimedia collaboration is accompanied by paintings and sculptural pieces by Corrine Yonce, which also explore concepts of home, home in public spaces, and how home impacts community.
