Who's saving whom? A Medical Story The Parish Players World Premiere of the new play Proxy by Kenneth Burchard and directed by Hetty Thomae. Burchard and Thomae hope the play will shine a light on Munchausen by Proxy, a medical condition and psychological disorder where a person induces symptoms to create an illusion of an illness in another person, often a child. The disorder is frightening(Thomae warned actors during casting about what they were getting into.) and hard to spot because the afflicted will "Doctor shop" or even move to a different state in order to evade detection. The playwright is a retired MD who wondered about the origin of this unusual complication and if an adult patient could exhibit continuation of the syndrome that had been imposed during childhood. Following the performances, Burchard, Thomae, and the cast engaged in a talkbacks with the audience.
